Web21 lug 2011 · Hi I have a 2001 xj 4x4 with the 4.0. Only mod is a air raid cold air intake. It's running rough at idle even like a miss. Runs rich I smell the fuel and see black smoke at start up when I step on it. Horrible gas mileage. Also idles really low. Runs fine otherwise. It's killing me on the gas and stop on go traffic. My son did not notice any drive ability problems. I kind of expected the injectors would be gummed up. Well today we pulled the plugs and they were all black and sooty.

I agree that its not a huge deal. The Jeep may need a good tune up anyway (plugs, wires, etc). I do have a scanguage, so I can hook that up and check the sensors. Spark plugs, Sent all 6 injectors out for cleaning-all100%, cleaned the fuel rail, new air filter, oil lube and filter, Checked compression, pulled the valve cover to check the rockers and stem movement.
